Symptoms:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling of fullness after a small meal
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain or tenderness, especially in the upper right part of the abdomen
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Swelling in the abdomen or legs
  • Fatigue or weakenss
  • Itching

Signs:

  • Enlarged liver or spleen
  • Ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)

Risk Factors

  • Chronic viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B or C)
  • Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver)
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
  • Obesiry
  • Diabetes
  • Exposure to aflatoxins (toxins produced by certain molds)
  • Family history of liver cancer
  • Certain genetic conditions (hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease)
  • Smoking

Other Screening Tools:

  • Liver function tests: Recommended for individuals with risk factors for liver cancer or symptoms suggestive of liver dysfunction.
  • Imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan, MRI): Recommended for individuals with risk factors for liver cancer or symptoms suggestive of liver dysfunction
  • Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) blood test: Recommended for individuals with risk factors for liver cancer or symptoms suggestive of liver dysfunction.

Next Exam(s) To Do

  • Liver ultrasound: If OneTest indicates elevated predictive risk for liver cancer, a liver ultrasound would be performed for further evaluation. This imaging test can detect liver nodules or masses that may be indicative of liver cancer. Ultrasound-guided biopsy may be needed for diagnosis.
